Board Membership
Want to help steer the direction of The Hague Effective Altruism? We're looking for people to join our board and take real responsibility for keeping our community thriving and impactful. And now there are two ways to do it.
Two ways to join: Junior and Senior
We recently moved to a two-tier board structure, so you can step in at the level of responsibility that fits where you are right now. Both are a real chance to build something and own a part of it.
Senior board members carry the organisation. You're formally part of the foundation's board (registered at the Kamer van Koophandel, the Dutch business register), you make the real decisions, and you hold the direction, the finances, and the strategy in your hands. It's the fullest version of the role, and most of this description speaks to it.
Junior board members take a real seat at the board, with a degree of responsibility that's yours to grow into. You join board discussions, take on projects, and help shape where THEA goes, with a senior member alongside you as a mentor and sounding board. It's an optional track that runs for up to six months, after which you can step up to a senior role or step off, whatever feels right. And it's not a hoop everyone has to jump through: if you're already ready, you can come straight in as a senior.
Think of the junior role as a genuine way into board work, with support, and room to take on more as you find your feet.
Here's what the junior role gives you:
A voice in board discussions and a hand in shaping what we do.
Real ownership of projects and events, including working with our partners.
A senior member as your mentor and main point of contact, there to back you up.
What you'll be doing
As a board member, you'll be taking actual responsibility for the organisation. This isn't just advisory. You'll be making real decisions and keeping things running. But here's the exciting part: you'll also have real freedom to shape what THEA becomes.
Depending on how many board members we bring on and what your strengths are, responsibilities might include:
Financial management: budgets, keeping track of spending, making sure we're sustainable
Internal and external communications: keeping the community informed, managing partnerships, representing The Hague Effective Altruism
Impact optimisation: thinking strategically about how we can do the most good with our resources and efforts
Operational stuff: like maintaining our rent agreement, finding alternative spaces if needed, and other legal or formal responsibilities
Seniors carry the full set; juniors take on a meaningful piece with a mentor's support, and grow from there.
But beyond the day-to-day, you'll have the opportunity to create your own projects and add your own touch to THEA. Want to start an expert fellowship? Focus on career workshops instead of intro programmes? Launch an efficient fundraising initiative? Experiment with new formats? The board has the freedom to pivot, experiment, and pursue what you think will have the most impact.
If we end up with three or more people, we'll probably do monthly board meetings. Otherwise, things might happen more informally as needed.
What we're looking for
Time commitment: around 4 to 6 hours per week (varies depending on what's happening). Juniors can ease in a little lighter while finding their feet.
Term length: for seniors, preferably at least 1 year. The junior track runs up to 6 months, after which you decide whether to continue as a senior.
Knowledge: good familiarity with EA topics (not expert level, but you should know your stuff).
Vibe check: reliable, thoughtful, willing to actually own your responsibilities and follow through.
Prior experience with organisational leadership, finances, or community building would be amazing, but if you're committed and enthusiastic, we want to hear from you anyway!
The real talk
This role requires genuine commitment. You'll be making decisions that affect the organisation, handling money, and dealing with actual responsibilities. If that sounds exciting rather than daunting, you might be perfect for this. And if you'd rather grow into it than dive straight in, the junior track is built for exactly that.
